Unpack our impact.

Since 2000, we have pursued our mission and vision through three fronts: pollution reduction; climate change mitigation; equity and justice.

In the 20+ years since its founding, Habitable (formerly Healthy Building Network) has innovated actionable solutions that leverage market influence for scaled impact. Our ambition is to reimagine the materials economy in service of human and planetary health. Whether through our own research and tools, or those fostered by the Habitable Innovation Hub, we take pride in being at the forefront of developing new models of chemical transparency and data integrity rooted in independent, public access to information. As we look ahead, we also want to highlight the milestones that are part of our past.

Campaign Success

HBN-led campaign leads EPA to order
arsenic phase out, resulting in dramatic
decrease across US.

Partner Environmental Working Group

Reduced the amount of imported arsenic used in the US from over twenty metric tons annually to ~six, reducing hazards to our drinking water, to children and workers in the US, and arsenic smelters in China.

2004

PVC-free
Carpet Challenge

We supported industry leaders’ phaseout of PVC in carpet, leading to development of PVC-free alternatives.

Partner Kaiser Permanente
